From Hawaiian Hualālai, from ka (“el) + hua (“fruit, seed) + a variant of laʻi (“calm”), the name of one of the craters of the volcano. Hōkūleʻa: It is the name of the first long-trip canoe built in the 20th century here in Hawaii. It also means Star of Gladness. Mauna Loa is a shield volcano, which means that it is a gently sloping mountain produced by a large number of generally very fluid lava flows.
An interesting fact about shield volcanoes is that they can form on other planets. For example, the largest mountain discovered on a planet in the solar system is Olympus Mons, located on Mars.
Hualalai
has the distinction of being the third youngest volcano and the third most historically active volcano on the Big Island (after Mauna Loa and Kilauea). The city of Kailua-Kona, birthplace of the infamous Kona Café, is built on the southwest slope of Hualalai.Hualalai is named after the wife of Hawaii Loa, a famous Hawaiian navigator. A series of earthquakes in 1929 are evidence that Hualalai could once again threaten Hawaii with an eruption within this century.
